Here are the answers to the most-asked Residence Life questions. If you can’t find the answer to your question here, email us at reslife@njcu.edu.

A: For the fall semester, you’ll know your room assignment at the beginning of August. For the spring semester, you’ll receive your room assignment at the start of January. Since room assignments sometimes change, check your to see your up-to-date room assignment.

A. Yes, you may select your room once your housing application has been submitted and your deposit paid or waived. If you do not select your assignment, the Office of Housing and Residence Life will assign your room and roommates.

A: Yes, we encourage you to request roommates. Requests may be submitted through the online housing application, through your or by sending an email to reslife@njcu.edu. We try to accommodate roommate requests, but they are not guaranteed.

A: If you do not select your roommates or elect to go with a random roommate assignment, the Office of Housing and Residence Life will make the assignments using your housing roommate profile as built by you on the housing application.

A: Once you are cleared by the Bursar's office and Health and Wellness for immunization, you will receive your check-in information by your Ò°»¨ÉçÇø email account. This will include process information and check-in times for your building and floor.

A: Your room has an XL twin bed, desk, desk chair, dresser or under-the-bed storage and a wardrobe or closet.

A: Yes, all three residence halls are equipped with Ò°»¨ÉçÇø Wi-Fi.

A: Refrigerators are permitted in your room, but they are limited to the following sizes: 1.7, 2.5, or 2.7 cu. ft.

A: Microwave ovens are not permitted in your room. However, each residence hall has a common kitchen facility for the preparation of snacks and light meals.

A: Sorry, but for everyone’s safety, hot plates, toaster ovens, electric skillets, coffee/hot water pots, sandwich grills, juicers and other electrical cooking appliances are not permitted in residence hall rooms.

A: You are encouraged to make your room your own space, but we do require you to hang your posters, photos and pictures using reusable adhesive strips instead of tape, pushpins and tacks. Also note that curtains, banners, hanging fabrics, flags and full-wall posters are not permitted.

A: All residence students share bathrooms, but the type of bathroom depends upon the hall to which you are assigned. In Vodra Hall, residents share suite-style bathrooms (two rooms joined by a single bathroom). In West Village Campus, each apartment has a shared bath for its residents. Co-Op Hall has community bathrooms.

A: The dining services meal plan is mandatory for all resident hall students and begins with dinner on the first day of check-in.

A: Meals are served seven days a week, except on major holidays when the university is closed. The Student Union Café offers a wide variety of selections, including restaurant-style entrées, a sauté bar, daily grilled specials, a salad bar and more. A: Each residence hall has a community laundry room.

A: Laundry is free in all three residence halls.

A: All mail is processed through the Ò°»¨ÉçÇø mail room. When you receive a package, you’ll get an email with instructions on how to pick up your package at the Vodra Hall lockers. If a package is too big for the lockers, the email will tell you where to retrieve the package.

A: Yes, all students are allowed cars on campus. Parking passes may be purchased through Parking Services.

A: Unfortunately, we do not provide storage.

A: The Department of Public Safety operates 24 hours a day and is always available to respond to any emergency or request for public safety services. Officers patrol the campus in vehicles and on foot, including all parking areas. In addition, officers are assigned to all residence halls. And a campus escort service can always be requested. On campus, dial 55 in an emergency.  Direct dial is 201-200-3128. Email DPS at public safety@njcu.edu.

A: No, the residence halls do not have a curfew.

A: To be eligible for on-campus housing, students must:

  • Complete the housing application at njcu.erezlife.com
  • Obtain financial clearance from the Bursar’s Office
  • Submit proof of required vaccinations

A: There is no specific deadline. However, housing is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Applying early increases your chances of securing a room. 

A: No. Housing is not guaranteed and is offered based on availability.

A: On campus housing cost varies from year to year. Please visit Housing and Meal Plan rates for the most updated housing charges.

A: No. First-year students are not required to live on campus. 

A: Ò°»¨ÉçÇø has three residence halls, West Campus Village, Vodra Hall, and Co-Op Hall. Currently, the only open building is West Campus Village. 

  • West Campus Village accommodates students in two-bedroom (shared) and four-bedroom (private) style suites. It features an on-site fitness center, game room, a multi-purpose area, and more. Live steps away from the university’s athletic center, health center, the Guarini Library, and other campus amenities. West Campus Village
  • Vodra Hall provides the ultimate environment for studying, socializing, and continuing to hone your life skills! Vodra offers students a traditional style of living. Double and single rooms (limited availability). Residents may participate in a variety of educational, community service, and recreational programs offered by the Office of Residence Life. Vodra Hall
  • Co-Op Hall: Another hall on campus but currently closed.

A: Yes, students can create roommate groups before the fall semester starts. Students without roommate groups are also able to select a room, and other students will be able to select the same room. Students without a housing assignment will receive a roommate assigned by housing and residence life. 

A: Students are not allowed to change their room assignments for the first two weeks of the semester. Students may request a room change after the first two weeks by filling out a form located on

A: Students interested in cancelling their room assignments must complete a housing cancellation form located in  and submit it for approval. Housing charges may apply. Please visit Important Students Housing Dates for additional information.

A: Yes, students interested in Winter or Summer, must complete a housing application and receive approval for housing and residence life. No meal plans are available to students during the summer or winter sessions. Students are responsible for their own meals. 

A: Unfortunately, our residence halls do not have kitchens in the building. 

A: Yes, Meal plans are required for all students living on campus.

A: The meal plan options are G1 and G5

  • G1 is swipes-only meal plan. 
  • G5 consists of declining dollars to use at dining facilities on campus. G5 is specifically for juniors, seniors, and graduate students. Students must email Housing and Residence Life prior to add/drop date to obtain this meal plan.

A: Upper classmates, junior, senior, or graduate students can request a meal plan change during the first two weeks of classes by emailing reslife@njcu.edu

A: Students interested in becoming a Resident Assistant must attend at least one informational meeting, which occurs in the fall semester. Additional information can be found at Resident Assistant Information.

A: Students must submit a request via , where you can describe the issue and include photos.

A: If you are in the process of checking out, you must contact the RA on duty. Your room will be inspected, and you will be asked to return your key.

A: Yes. Ò°»¨ÉçÇø offers gender-inclusive housing for students. 

A: Only emotional support animals (ESAs) are permitted and must be approved in advance through the Office of Specialized Services. Pets that are not registered with OSS are not allowed.

A: No. The university does not assist with finding or managing off-campus housing.

A: In order to pay your housing bill, you can make payments in-person at the Bursar's Office located in Hepburn Hall Room 106 or pay online through

A: Yes. A $150 housing deposit is required. You may request a deposit waiver by emailing reslife@njcu.edu.

A: Yes, there are available payment plans. Please contact the Bursar's office for the payment plan options.

A: No. Financial aid does not directly cover housing or meal plans. Students are encouraged to speak with the Financial Aid Office for help understanding their total aid package.
